How Much Sun Do Tomatoes Need?
Cherry tomatoes need 4-6 hours of sun. Larger beefsteak types need 8-12 hours. But if you're not sure you have enough sun? Plant anyway. Your tomatoes never read the books that say they need specific amounts of sunshine.
Why Sunlight Matters
Plants convert sunlight into food and energy. More sun means more energy, which means more fruit. The leaves are the food factories—without enough sun, plants produce enough energy to stay alive but not enough extra to make lots of tomatoes.
The Numbers
Cherry tomatoes: 4-6 hours minimum
Beefsteak tomatoes: 8-12 hours
Best for all types: 8+ hours
But if you have less than 4-6 hours? Plant anyway and see what happens. You're using great soil, fertilizing properly, watering correctly, and treating your plants right. Most likely they'll do fine.
Morning vs Afternoon Sun
Morning to early afternoon sun is better than midday to late afternoon. After 2 p.m., direct sun can be blistering hot and damage tomatoes.
When afternoon sun gets brutal, do two things:
1. Keep roots moist — Water twice daily if needed.
2. Add shade cloth — Cut strips about 3 feet wide by 6 feet tall and hang them on the hot sun side of your cage. Leave them up 24/7.

The Bottom Line
Pick a spot with at least 4-6 hours of sun, preferably 8+. Place containers where they'll get maximum light. But if your only option is less than ideal? Try it anyway. You won't know unless you plant.
